A 27-year-old Indigenous man in the northern New South Wales town of Gunnedah has died after being tasered by police.
Police were called to a Herbert Street home about 8pm on Thursday and approached the man, who allegedly became aggressive when addressed.
Pepper spray and a taser were used in a struggle with the man and he lost consciousness.
He later died at Gunnedah Hospital.
A female officer has also been hospitalised with a bite wound and knee injury.
The incident will be independently reviewed, NSW Police said.
Federal Greens Senator, Gunnai Gunditjmara and Djab Wurrung woman Lidia Thorpe, said in a tweet she was “heartbroken”.
NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge said over-policing remained a significant issue in Indigenous communities.
"If the answer to every social issue in regional NSW is more police then it is inevitable that we will see more First Nations deaths in custody," he said in a tweet.
NSW Police has previously rejected accusations of over-policing.
Last weekend, became the eight Indigenous person to have died in custody across Australia since March.
