A picture has emerged of a father and son who were victims of the barrage of airstrikes conducted by the Syrian government and Russia over the weekend.

More than one hundred people died and hundreds others were seriously injured during two hundred airstrikes since Friday morning, according to aid organisation the White Helmets, making it one of the heaviest attacks since the war began in Syria in March 2011.

The picture, released by the White Helmets, also known as Syrian Civil Defense, has been widely distributed online, often alongside the hashtag #HolocaustAleppo.

It shows rubble holding in place the final poses of a father and his son - the father protects his face with his arm and pulls his knee up as his son lays by his side, both covered in blood and dust.

A spokesperson for the White Helmets told CNN they were from a family of five. Another child was also killed, but the mother and a daughter survived.

A number of photos of the conflict have stirred the public over recent months. In August, a photo of a bloodied and shell-shocked boy went viral following an airstrike on the al-Qaterji neighbourhood in Aleppo. Days later, video footage emerged of two boys crying for their brother after he was killed in a barrel bomb attack in the same city.
The most recent airstrikes come after a fragile ceasefire brokered by US and Russia failed.

In UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon’s outgoing speech last week, he lambasted the bloodshed that has left more than 300,000 dead and forced millions to leave their homes.

"Many groups have killed many innocents, but none more so than the government of Syria, which continues to barrel bomb neighborhoods and systematically torture thousands of detainees," he told the General Assembly.

"Powerful patrons that keep feeding the war machine also have blood on their hands."
The White Helmets has been contacted for comment.
