It's a scientific fact that Schitt's Creek is one of the best shows on TV right now - but the Canadian series, which is about to enter its sixth and final season, has a special place in the hearts of LGBTIQ+ viewers around the world.
Just ask Ellie from Scotland, who uploaded a video this week describing how the show's central relationship between David (Dan Levy) and Patrick (Noah Reid) helped inspire her to come out as lesbian to her family.
In a moving video shared to Twitter, the social media user explained: “I was watching Schitt’s Creek, the episode called ‘Meet the Parents’ – it’s my favourite… it hits me right here.”
The episode she's referring to depicts Patrick coming out to his parents, who, to his surprise, respond lovingly and with acceptance.
“I was watching it and Patrick has just come out, and I was like wow, I should do that," Ellie continued. “So I rewinded [sp] it and I watched him come out again, then I rewinded [sp] it again and I cried a little bit.”
She added: “But then I was like, I’m gonna do this. I was pushing myself a bit. But I did it, I went downstairs and I did it, I just told my mum that I’m gay.”
Thankfully, Ellie said that her mum was “fine” and “really supportive”.
“She had her suspicions,” Ellie said. “But I did that. I would not have been able to do this without Schitt’s Creek, that show has helped me a lot.”
Levy, who also writes and produces on the show, soon retweeted the video, writing: “And so I cried. Sending you so. much. love.”
In another tweet, Reid added: "This is the absolute best!"
