Queer roles celebrated with Oscar nominations

While some members of the LGBTIQ+ community celebrated the visibility and representation, others pointed out that none of the queer roles nominated were played by actual queer people.

In what is already "a banner year for LGBTQ inclusion", the 2019 Oscars nominations have seen a record number of queer films and characters recognised, with half of the films nominated for Best Picture featuring LGBTIQ+ characters or themes.

Green Book, The Favourite, A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody each picked up a coveted nod for Best Picture, with The Favourite picking up a landmark 10 noms.

Despite some controversy surrounding the film's portrayal of bisexual Queen front man Freddie Mercury, Rami Malek earned himself a Best Actor nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody. Lady Gaga also picked up two nods for her performance in A Star Is Born - one for Best Actress and one for Best Original Song.
Other noteworthy nominees include Mahershala Ali, for his performance as black queer pianist Dr. Donald Shirley in Green Book - and Melissa McCarthy for playing lesbian author Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me?.

While some members of the LGBTIQ+ community celebrated the visibility and representation, others pointed out that none of the queer roles nominated were played by actual queer people.
