Kill Bill Vol 1, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction

Kill Bill Vol 1, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction

We are apparently only getting one more movie out of Quentin Tarantino. The video store clerk turned filmmaker has long averred that directors start to fall off as they age, and decreed that he would call it quits after making 10 films. With both Kill Bill volumes counting as one movie, the big-chinned wunderkind’s next film, The Critic, is supposed to be his last (and are we still allowed to call him a wunderkind when he just turned 61?).

But never fret – that means a whopping 60% of the former Elvis impersonator’s theatrical directing output is now at your fingertips (we’re discounting his segment of Four Rooms and his work on Sin City because, well, everyone else does). Make yourself your own little with a couple – or all! – of these certified bangers in the at SBS On Demand.

Reservoir Dogs

The one that started it all! This gritty, lo-fi Sundance breakout sees a group of professional criminals known only by their colour-themed code names – Mr White, Mr Blue, Mr Orange and so on – convene after a botched diamond robbery knowing they were set up and one of them is, in all likelihood, a rat. Starring Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Steve Buscemi, Reservoir Dogs crackles with ugly masculine energy and sheer cinematic brio.

Reservoir Dogs airs Saturday 6th April at 8:30pm on SBS World Movies, it will be available to stream on SBS On Demand after broadcast for a limited time.

Pulp Fiction

It’s a little passe to observe that Pulp Fiction changed cinema, but it really, really did. With everyone wanting to get into the Tarantino business, the geeky auteur was able to attract the likes of Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman for his second feature film, along with revitalising John Travolta’s then-moribund career and vaulting Samuel L. Jackson to mainstream stardom. A twisty, recursive tale of lowlife hijinks in modern Los Angeles, Pulp Fiction tracks the exploits of a pair of put-upon hitmen, a frustrated and failing boxer, and various other ne-er-do-wells as their paths cross in various fun and violent ways. Very likely the most quoted movie on Earth, but don’t quote us.

Pulp Fiction airs Saturday 13th April at 8:30pm on SBS World Movies, it is available to stream on SBS On Demand for a limited time.

Jackie Brown

Tarantino’s most mature film goes straight to the source – crime novelist Elmore Leonard, whose clever, cynical capers remain a huge influence on his work. Adapted from the 1992 book Rum Punch, Jackie Brown sees Blaxploitation legend Pam Grier as the titular flight attendant/money smuggler team up with hangdog bail bondsman Max Cherry (the late, great Robert Forster) to take down gun runner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). Yes, it’s a ripping crime drama, but it’s also a meditation on ageing, loneliness, and missed opportunities.

Jackie Brown airs Saturday 20th April at 8:30pm on SBS World Movies, it will be available to stream on SBS On Demand after broadcast for a limited time.

Kill Bill Vol 1 and Kill Bill Vol 2

This “roaring rampage of revenge” sees QT reteam with his muse, Uma Thurman, with her iconic character, The Bride, whom the credits note was “…created by Q & U.” Awakening from a years-long coma, Thurman’s character sets about tracking down the people who gunned down her entire wedding party: her former lover, Bill (David Carradine) and lethal squad of international assassins he leads. What unfolds across two brilliantly bloody films is a lovingly brutal paean to classic kung fu flicks, spaghetti westerns, yakuza thrillers, and more.

Kill Bill Vol 1 airs Saturday 27th April and Kill Bill Vol 2 Saturday 4th May at 8:30pm on SBS World Movies, they will be available to stream on SBS On Demand after broadcast for a limited time.

Death Proof

Death Proof

Half of Tarantino’s ill-fated Grindhouse project with Desperado director Robert Rodriguez, this throwback to ‘70s drive-in fodder fared better when separated from RR’s Planet Terror () and allowed to stand on its own… four tires. Stunt legend turned actor Zoe Bell is one of a group of groovy chicks tooling around Texas (the others are Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms and Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who draw the predatory attention of Kurt Russell’s Stuntman Mike, a serial killer who uses his “death proof” muscle car as a weapon. Unfortunately for Mike, these girls are tougher than his usual prey, and car-nage ensues.

Death Proof airs Saturday 11th May at 8:30pm on SBS World Movies, and is available to stream on SBS On Demand now (available from 1 April).

The Hateful Eight

The Hateful Eight
Source: SBS / SBS Movies
A veritable murderers row of brilliant actors, including Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Bruce dern, Jennfer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, and more, play a… well, row of murderers (and their victims) in this wintry western. A group of strangers find themselves trapped in an isolated outpost during a blizzard, but with one of them being a dangerous outlaw getting hauled in for trial and others being not whom they seem, it’s not long before it’s all gunfire and retribution.

The Hateful Eight airs Saturday 18th May at 8:30pm on SBS World Movies, it will be available to stream on SBS On Demand after broadcast for a limited time.
