Road to recovery
Although the path to her child's treatment was not easy, Gemma Cruz Guotos expresses deep gratitude for the support provided by NDIS.

"The government's financial aid has been a significant help. We've availed many services such as speech, occupational, respite, and daily activities. Now, he is in short-term accommodation and is heading towards supported independent living."

"There has been a great improvement, from being aggressive to seemingly having no disability, especially in his development," she shares.

NDIS process
Ms. Guotos explains that when applying for NDIS, the first crucial step involves assessing the condition to determine its significance or severity. Subsequently, one must proceed to submit the application, followed by undergoing a thorough evaluation. Upon approval, there is an anticipation for the determination of the specific type of assistance. It involves a budget allocation, requiring a detailed explanation for each requested service or fund.

Children with disabilities deserve to be treated well
"Children with disabilities deserve to be treated well and given opportunities to improve their lives. They have the right to live a normal life, so they should be encouraged and supported,” shares Ms Guotos.

Despite being unable to alter others' opinions, she is determined to change people's perceptions of autism.

“Others say we have three languages that’s why he can't speak words. Others suggest letting him be and just provide food for him. I cannot do that to my child. They should live a normal life, and their abilities and talents should be uplifted.”

A message for parents navigating autism
In recounting her journey, she highlights the significance of embracing the reality that your child has a disability. The second step involves open discussions within the family about how to confront the challenges ahead. Recognising the difficulty particularly for mothers, she extends encouragement for them to hold onto faith and find solace in prayer.

"First and foremost is accepting that your child has a disability, have a family discussion on how to face the challenges. Believe as a mother that you have the ability to provide unconditional love and care to your child. Don't lose hope, hold on to prayer," shares Ms Guotos.
