Kirk Manas, a nurse and father from Melbourne, wrote his first children’s book entitled 'Juan Pinoy.' The vibrant story highlights the Filipino culture, inspired by his daughter and his own feelings of disconnection from his roots.

KEY POINTS
  • Kirk, who was born in the Philippines but moved to Australia when he was four years old, expressed the challenges of raising culturally aware children. As a son of an OFW, he felt the disconnect from his heritage and wanted to bridge that gap for his children.
  • The father emphasises the importance of reading to children, noting that it not only enriches their vocabulary and knowledge but also fosters meaningful connections and cherished moments between parent and child.
  • April 2 is International Children's Book Day, an event dedicated to promoting a love for reading and nurturing the imagination of children around the world.
'Usapang Parental' is SBS Filipino's segment on parenting. It features the stories of migrant families, parenting issues, raising kids, and parenting tips and advice from experts.

Growing up in Australia, I often felt disconnected from my Filipino heritage. That is why I wanted to create something meaningful for myself and ensure my children have a strong connection to their roots. I am doing my best to introduce the culture to them and hope the book sparks meaningful conversations
