We ask Professor Cleo Anne Calimbahin, Senior Research Fellow of the ANU Philippines Institute and Professor at the Political Science Department De La Salle University about the implications of the recent events surrounding former President Duterte's arrest in the coming May 2025 mid-term elections.
If they've been in power for 30 years; the political machinery would work well. There is also a personal style to it, they develop personal relations with their constituents; and they become their Ninong, Ninang. That is why they attend weddings, baptisms, and funerals. There's that personal touch at the same time there is the machinery that seems to work for them.

While many Filipinos live abroad, many continue to aspire to retire in the Philippines. There is also very strong family ties. Between the nostalgia and strong family ties, it pulls Filipinos back home
