Members of the Pakistani community in Australia are mourning the death of an international student who went missing, believed drowned, in rough surf in New South Wales on Sunday.
Mohsin Awan, the 23-year-old University of Newcastle student, was taking “selfies” with another person when huge swells swept them off rocks near Nobbys Beach, media reported.
Rescuers were able to save one of them but could not find Mr Awan.
The search continued on Monday and Tuesday in what now appears to be an unsuccessful attempt to find his body.
"We are all in grief but this is a very important time to highlight the significance of safety and precaution."
Condolence messages and prayers have been circulating on social media for Mr Awan, who started university education in Australia in 2016 after coming from Lahore, Pakistan.
The Pakistani Consulate in Sydney is in touch with Mr Awan’s family back home as well as the DFAT, NSW government, police, and University of Newcastle.
