“When I talk about ube to Australian customers, I often spend half the time explaining the flavour. When I say ube, I never compare it to ‘yum’ or taro, I emphasise that it’s Philippine ube,” Bacani explains. “We need to own ube, champion it, and put our brand on it. Learn how to describe ube—not just its ingredients. I describe it as having an earthy texture, subtly sweet, and so moreish that you’ll want more and more.”

At the 2024 World Beer Awards, Engkanto’s High Hive Honey Ale made history by winning the World’s Best Beer in its category. Other entries, including Paint Me Purple Ube Lager, also bagged prestigious awards.
It’s important that Australians become as accepting of our flavours in food as they are in beer. Own it, champion it, and be proud.
