The majority of Filipinos in Australia are Catholics, comprising up to 76% according to the latest census, and Christmas is one of their biggest celebrations.

Among the many traditions that make this season special, Simbang Gabi holds a cherished place in Filipino culture. Celebrated during the Christmas season or the Season of Advent, Simbang Gabi involves attending dawn Masses for nine consecutive days leading up to Christmas. This novena practice traces its origins to the early days of Christianity in the Philippines, when farmers and fishermen would attend Mass before beginning their day’s work.

In Western Australia, Josephine Cabagyo, the coordinator of Simbang Gabi at Notre Dame Parish Cloverdale, shared how this cherished tradition has not only deepened her faith but also played a vital role in fostering the growth and unity of the Filipino community in Perth.
This is where I truly felt the joy of living in Australia—not because of material things or the beauty of the place, but because of the community and the people offering support [emotionally and spiritually].
